City of Salem, MA contractors conducted soil sampling in the City owned Gallows Hill Park field (Mansell Field) and identified elevated levels of arsenic in the soil. Research determined the property formerly housed various tannery/currier operations over the course of several decades. The property was procured by the city in the 1940's. MassDEP and the City requested EPA evaluate the residential properties abutting Mansell Field for arsenic. The City is addressing contamination on City owned property with oversight and direction from MassDEP.
