The American Creosote DeRidder site (Site) is a 55-acre tract of land owned by Central Manufacturing Company (CMC) located south of the city of DeRidder, Beauregard Parish, Louisiana. Historical timber treatment operations at the Site have resulted in creosote related compounds contamination. It is reported that timber treatment was performed at the Site from the 1920’s to approximately 1957, at which time operations went dormant. It is reported that soil, sediment, and surface water are contaminated with waste from former Site operations, which included liquid pitch oil, tar oil, and coal tar solutions. Wastes were collected in on-site concrete vats and pits. Contaminants found at the Site include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), and metals. Site characteristics include a drip area, processing basin area, waste pit, and washout area.

The average Site elevation is 150 feet above mean sea level and consists primarily of pine with oak and cypress in the low bottom areas. The Site is bounded on the north by the rural roadway, to the east with heavy brush, to the south undeveloped land, and to the west the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad spur, currently used by Mead Westvaco Corporation. The Site’s broader surroundings include commercial, industrial, and residential uses. The Site was once located in the now obsolete Bundick’s Creek Game and Fish Reserve Watershed Basin.

The Site was listed on the NPL, and at the request of the EPA Remedial Program, EPA Removal Program will be assessing the need for and conducting a removal action at the Site which would compliment remediation operations.
