On May 28, 2023, EPA received notification that the City of McCall, Idaho was responding to a
discharge of oil to Payette Lake in McCall, Idaho. The discharge, which
originated from a storm drain outfall, caused a sheen with a diesel odor on the
lake. Oil is reported to have impacted city parks and nearby beaches, both of
which were closed. Payette Lake is the primary drinking water source for the
city. Water intakes were shut off after discovery of the spill and samples were
collected. The City deployed sorbent boom and used a vacuum truck to removal oil; however,
recoverable oil may still be present along the shoreline and in portions of the
storm water conveyance. The source and the volume of oil spilled is
unknown. The City of McCall and Idaho Department of Environmental Quality
(IDEQ) requested EPA assistance on 31 May 2023.
