On July 15, 2025 EPA and its contractors mobilized to the Ballouville Mill Site to initiate a Time Critical Removal Action addressing lead and asbestos contamination in building debris. This is following a fire that occurred at the property November 16, 2023 which resulted in the building being demolished. Local fire departments and Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) responded to the initial fire. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
Following the fire CT DEEP referred the site to the EPA Removal Program. EPA did a Site Investigation, taking samples from the property in February and July 2024. On April 30, 2025, the Action Memo for the site was signed.
