On June 10 , 2024, at approximately 4:30 PM, the EPA was notified by the National Response Center of a potential release of Vinyl Chloride from a 6 cars derailment in Gregory, TX. Out of the 6 cars derailed  one car is upside down, three are on the side. About 250 residents near 3rd Street, Franklin, Marion at Mission St., residents at the Glades apartments, and residents at Haven apartments are being evacuated as a precautionary measure. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation. 

The Texas Commission of Environmental Quality, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Department of Emergency Management, and San Patricio County Emergency Management have responded to monitor the incident.  EPA On Scene Coordinator and technical assistance contractor have been activated to monitor the incident.

On June 11, 2024, at approximately 1:15 AM, all 4 rail cars were up-righted and back on the tracks. Subsequently, the Mayor of Gregory lifted the evacuation order for the residents.
