On Wednesday, September
25, 2024, EPA received a National Response Center report regarding three
sites of abandoned 55-gallon steel drums near Flat Rock Creek in Tulsa, OK. EPA
performed a site evaluation and inventory of the three locations. A total
of 109 drums were found in various damaged states with some unknown contents
leaking.
As
part of the site evaluation, EPA conducted perimeter air monitoring at each
site. EPA monitored for oxygen, lower explosive limits, carbon monoxide,
hydrogen sulfide, and Volatile Organic Compounds. All perimeter air
monitoring readings throughout the assessment remained below detection
limits. Following the inventory, EPA built containment around each drum
site to combat stormwater pollution and runoff. EPA will continue to work
with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and Cherokee
Nation as we determine our next steps.
