Overview:
On 12/18/2024 at 6:42 PM, the EPA was notified by National
Response Center of a discharge of an unknown amount of diesel fuel from a
Union Pacific Railroad freight train in Pecos, TX. According to the NRC, the spill resulted from a train
derailment. After further investigation, Union Pacific updated the amount of
diesel discharged to 4800 gallons. The incident is approximately 1 mile from the
Pecos River. On 12/19/2024, On-Scene Coordinator Mzee and EPA‘s technical assistance contractor were activated to determine if there was a threat of diesel discharge to the
Pecos River, provide oversight of RP’s response efforts, and conduct community air monitoring. The National Transportation Safety Board, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Reeves County Emergency Management, and local police and fire departments also responded to the incident.
