On
Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at approximately 2300hrs, the Chicago Magnesium
Casting Co facility was engulfed in a large fire due to unknown causes. On the
morning of March 6, 2025, EPA received notification of the fire. EPA
h deployed an OSC and START contractors to provide air monitoring and
technical assistance to support the firefighting operations.
As of 1100 March 6, 2025, the
fire was contained but certain areas continue to smolder. Perimeter air
monitoring for VOCs and particulate matter has shown no exceedances at this
time. Large stocks of magnesium stored at the facility are believed
to be impacted. Facility personnel
estimate that roughly 10,000 lbs of magnesium in various forms are on the
property.
