On June 13, 2025, at approximately 14:00 EDT, EPA received NRC Report #1433989. A caller reported a 500-gallon tote, and other drums illegally dumped in Delray Park in Detroit, Michigan. At this time, there is no known
discharge or release; however, the threat of release is present and the drum and totes are located adjacent to a soccer field and playground.
On June 17, 2025, the City of Detroit (City), Environmental Affairs conferred with Michigan Energy, Great Lakes, & Environment (EGLE) and requested EPA's assistance. EPA mobilized to the Site, mobilized its ERRS contractor, and also discussed with the City logistics for removing the drums and tote. When EPA arrived on-scene, the cotainers were unsecured, open to weather conditions, easily accessible to the public, and staining on the ground surface was observed surrounding the tote. The City had cordoned off the area where the containers had been dumped. The tote contained approximately 200 gallons of solvent and the drums were found to be RCRA empty.
On June 18, 2025, EPA and it ERRS contractor returned to the site, collected a sample from the tote for disposal analysis, and transferred the contents of the tote to 55-gallon drums.
Disposal of the tote's contents is awaiting analytical results and waste profiling. All containers removed from the park have been taken to a secured location pending disposal.
EPA has concluded its emergency response activities.
