Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is evaluating
potential lead contaminated soil on residential properties near the Vulcan-Louisville/Fansteel
Smelting site in North Chicago, IL. The soil surrounding the site may have high
levels of lead from historic smelting operations nearby. If high levels of lead
are found on properties, EPA may need to clean up and restore those properties.
Before sampling work begins, EPA needs permission to access private property to
do FREE soil sampling to confirm if soil in the property has high levels
of lead.
You should have received a notice from the City of North Chicago directing you to this website. The map at the bottom of this website shows the initial area of concern where lead contaminated soil may exist. If your property is in this area, please follow the instructions below to consent to EPA accessing your property to conduct FREE soil sampling.

Site History
The site was home to a zinc smelter called Vulcan-Lousiville Smelting and in 1942, a portion of the property was sold to Fantsteel, an aerospace manufacturing plant. 1998, EPA conducted a $3.1 million cleanup, removing more than 49,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil and sediment from a portion of the property. In 2002, Fansteel filed for bankruptcy. As part of a bankruptcy settlement agreement, the company completed a site investigation. The property was sold to the city of North Chicago for $1.4 million, and the company paid that amount to EPA to fund future cleanup at the site. Those funds were placed in a special account that’s used to help pay for the cleanup.
