At approximately 0130 on May 17, 2008 BNSF reported the derailment of six tank cars at it's Lafayette, LA switching yard. Cause of the derailment is unknown at this time. The NRC reported Incident Report #871199 to the EPA Region 6 Phone-duty Officer at approximately 7:00 am CST.

It was reported that an unknown amount of hydrochloric acid (HCL) was released from one of the railcars and that a evacuation of 1.0 miles around the facility had occured. The EPA START3 contractor and an On-Scene Coordinator were activated to respond to the scene.
