On October 16, 2008, the Ohio EPA was notified of a mercury spill in a residential area on Huntridge Avenue, Mount Healthy, Ohio. The NRC spill number is #837332. The Mount Healthy Fire Department covered the visible mercury spill location with plastic. Initial Ohio EPA air monitoring indicated widespread mercury contamination in and around the garage and driveway.

On October 17, 2008, EPA On-Scene Coordinator Steve Renninger, Ohio EPA On-Scene Coordinator Jim Crawford, START, Hamilton County Health Dept, and Mount Healthy Fire Department responded to the spill. EPA and Ohio EPA air monitoring indicated elevated levels of mercury in the residential indoor carpet as high as 17 mg/m3. The source of the mercury spill appeared to be the garage area with visible mercury in the garage door area and immediate driveway. Based on the air monitoring results, the Hamilton County Health Dept posted the residence unfit for human occupancy on October 17, 2008, pending cleanup and verification sampling. On October 17, 2008 (2100 hours), EEI initiated cleanup with removal of visible mercury in the garage and driveway area. See "Images" section for photos.

On October 18, 2008, EPA START conducted air monitoring to define the extent of contamination.

On October 27, 2008, the emergency response was completed. See POLREP #1 for details.
