At approximately 0047 hours on 26 May 2009, a tire fire was discovered near the southeast corner of Hwy 80 and FM 14 in the city of Hawkins, Wood County, Texas.

The fire was reported to the NRC at approximately 0252 hours local time. The potential size of the tire fire could grow from 300,000 up to 500,000 tires covering an acre to 20 acres of property. A voluntary evacuation order is in place for parts of the city of Hawkins.

The Hawkins ISD located immediately adjacent to the west of the fire was closed due to smoke.
