Subject: EPA responded to an Oil Spill in the Middle River, Stafford Springs, CT
A 1,000 gallon underground storage tank, located approximately 20 feet from the channelized river bank, suffered a catastrophic leak shortly after being refilled.
Most of the tank's 1,000 gallons of #2 oil were lost and about 100-200 gallons of heating oil migrated through subsurface groundwater flow into the Middle River.
Response actions included the immediate removal of the tank and the recovery of oil from both the river and the tank grave. Next, an interceptor trench was dug between the tank grave at the edge of the river channel (a project complicated by close proximity to the municipal sewer main in this general vicinity). The interceptor trench was intermitently pumped to prevent further discharge to the Middle River.
The responsible party is the Town of Stafford and they are cooperating and funding the removal.
The Middle River is known for its healthy trout habitat.
