The Grants Mineral Belt in New Mexico extends along the southern margin of the San Juan Basin within Cibola, McKinely, Sandoval and Bernalillo counties as well as on Tribal lands. The Grants Mineral Belt was the primary area for uranium extraction and production activities in New Mexico from the 1950's until the mid 1980s.

Historical uranium mining impacts within the Shiprock Mining District and the tribal part of the Ambrosia Lake sub-district of the Grants Mineral Belt are under the jurisdiction of the Navajo Nation and U.S. EPA Region 9 (San Franciso). The remainder of Ambrosia Lake sub-district (non-tribal), as well as the Marquez and non-tribal portions of the Laguna sub-districts that contain legacy uranium sites are under the jurisdiction of U.S. EPA Region 6 (Dallas) and the State of New Mexico.
