On Sunday, November 28, 2010, the Western Wayne County Hazmat Response Team, on behalf of the Belleville Fire Department, requested assistance from the U.S. EPA in responding to a petroleum discharge in Belleville Lake, which is a tributary to the Huron River and Lake Erie. The source of the petroleum was the Vessel Princess Laura. The Responsible Party (RP) responded and is in the process of removing the sunken vessel from Lake Belleville and removing the petroleum and sheen from the waterbody.
