The fire is believed to have started as the result of some "hotwork" being done on the pipeline during a move. The material was a combination of gasoline and #2 fuel oil in the line. The pipeline is now shut down awaiting repairs as the result of the fire. It appears that no materials made it into the surface water staying in the 2nd containment under the pipeline. There was an over flow of fire fighting foam mixed with "Purple K" (potassium bicarbonate) but, appears to have not strayed into the nearby Arthur Kill or the outfalls to the nearby feeder stream. These adjacent area which pooled the firefighting materials was removed via vac-truck
The fire was out at approximately 11:30am. No further action is required by EPA. NJDEP also responded and also closed their portion of the case. For more information refer to the action reports on the WebEOC function of the www.epaosc.net website.
