Approximately five cubic yards of asbestos containing material (ACM) was discovered illegally dumped in a city-owned abandoned lot located at 11181 French Road in Detroit. The lot was unsecured and showed numerous signs of tresspass. Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Air Quality Division (MDEQ-AQD) investigated the complaint on March 28, 2011. MDEQ-AQD sampled the material and confirmed that it contained asbestos.

MDEQ referred the site to U.S. EPA on April 15, 2011. Strong winds had blown friable ACM around the site and the potential for additional off-site migration was a threat. U.S. EPA mobilized ERRS on 4/15/11 to secure the site. U.S. EPA, ERRS and START returned to the site on 4/16/11 and conducted a removal action.
