On April 16, 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) responded to an oil spill in Hillisburg, Indiana at the request of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). IDEM and EPA observed oil sheen discharging from a ditch bank below an abandoned house at 8989 E. Oak Street. Oil in the ditch was flowing north toward the South Fork of Wildcat Creek. IDEM and a local volunteer fire department deployed sorbent boom and pads to recover sheen.

Neighbors reported that an individual entered the house on Friday, April 15th and removed a heating oil tank from the basement, and spill oil in the tank onto the basement floor. After obtaining access from a Clinton County commissioner, EPA documented that oil covered the basement floor.

April 16 and 17, EPA conducted a cleanup of oil and oiled debris in the basement of the residence and recovered and replaced sorbent boom in the ditch to capture any remaining oil.
