The Hammond Solvent Recovery Plant shut down in the late 1970's. While the owners claimed it was shut down properly, there are no records indicating such. With a history of dumping, spills, and fires, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) referred this site to US EPA in late July of 2011 to conduct further investigation to determine the threat to human health or the environment.
