On Thursday night, December 29, 2011, a petroleum sheen was observed as periodic bubbles or blooms on the Clearwater River in Orofino, Clearwater County, Idaho within the Nez Perce Reservation. The source of the petroleum contamination to the River was unknown, as there had not been any reported spills or discharges.

On Friday December 30, 2011, EPA Region 10 was notified. Idaho Department of Ecology Quality (IDEQ) was coordinating the response and requested EPA to serve as the lead agency. OSC Liverman was dispatched to the site early Saturday morning December 31, 2011.

See Polreps for additional response and site investigation details.
