On April 25 at approximately 1350, a 10,000 aboveground storage tank (AST) at the StoneCo facility in Maumee, Ohio released 6,000 gallons of #4 Fuel Oil into Hielman Ditch, which is a tributary to Swan Creek. StoneCo immediately hired an environmental response company to begin removal of oil from the ditch. On April 26, 2004, U.S. EPA OSC’s Gulch and Kimble responded and met with Ohio EPA OSC Gerber at the site. After a tour of the recovery locations, it was determined that the oversight provided by the Ohio EPA was sufficient for the release. In addition, the PRP was cooperative and following the direction specified by the Ohio EPA. On April 27, 2004, during an entire ditch walk by the PRP contractor, a duck was found to be oiled and dead near a nest of eggs. Ohio DNR was immediately notified and responded to recover the duck. A phone call was also placed to the DOI contact for Region 5. Ohio EPA OSC Gerber will contact OSC Gulch if further assistance is required from the U.S. EPA.
