At 0825 on May 23, 2004, an explosion and subsequent fire occurred at a gasoline pipeline facility operated by Olympic Pipeline. Reportedly, the explosion occurred at a sampling valve on a 1/2-inch internal-diameter (ID) pipe that was attached to a larger 16-inch ID pipe. The Renton Fire Department (RFD) were the initial responders on-site and extinguished the fire. An unknown quantity of gasoline was released from the damaged pipe onto the surrounding surface of asphault and concrete. The affected section of the pipeline contained approximately 4,100 barrels of gasoline, approximately 200,000 gallons.
