A tri-city bomb squad exploded a pipe bomb containing mercury in the private parking between S 11th and 12th Avenues in Yakima at around 7 am Friday morning, 8/2/13. WDOE asking for EPA assistance with the clean up of the mercury. OSC Parker and 3 START contractors arrived at the scene around 4pm that afternoon and began assessment and clean up.


WDOE Spill Responder maintaing exclusion zone around mercury release. Signage to prevent public from enting alley where mercury was spilled. START contractors using Lumex mercury analyzer to locate mercury. START applied paint to pavement marking edge of visible mercury contamination. Yakima City Public Works preparing to apply hot asphalt to visibly contaminated aa. City of Yakima Public Works applying hot asphalt to visibly contaminated area. Northwest Striping and Sealing applying cold asphalt slurry seal to remaining 7,400 square feet of contaminated pavement. Northwest Striping and Sealing employee applying concrete sealant to contaminated sidewalk. Concrete sealer used. Northwest Striping and Sealing employee applying concrete sealer to road approach from West Chestunt street to alley. Small divet in grass showing area after contaminated soil and grass removal. Nearing completion of cold asphalt slurry seal application to parking lots and alley.
