The Añasco Abandoned Drums Site (the Site) consists of ten abandoned 55 gal. drums with unknown contents on a residential property. The labeling on the drums had mostly been removed, with the only labeling present at the time of the Removal Assessment indicating flammability. Screening with a multi-RAE at a corroded hole in the top of one of the drums indicated that high levels of VOCs were present.
The Site is a residence located in Bo Carrera, Añasco, Puerto Rico. The Site is bordered to the east by a stream, and to the north, south, and west by forest. The Site consists of a residence, a garage, and a rooster training ground. The stream is located about 20 feet downhill from the drums. Therefore, any release of product from the drums could result in contamination of the stream. The origin of the drums is unknown. The owner informed the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board (EQB) that they had abandoned the property about five years ago and the drums were present when they returned.
