The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) requested assistance from U.S. EPA in securing containers of abandoned hazardous materials following a fire on May 25, 2015. The fire occurred in one of the buildings at the former Hoosier Wood Preservers in Indianapolis, Indiana. The facility previously operated as a wood treater that used chromated copper arsenate (CCA) and/or borate in pressurized wood treatment cylinders.
On May 26, 2015, OSC Lam walked through the facility with IDEM and the Marion County Public Health Department, and documented numerous abandoned containers of oxidizers (including 35% hydrogen peroxide), corrosives, flammables, and unknown materials. EPA staged, secured, sampled, and disposed of drums and other containers.
