1.1.1 Incident Category

Abandoned chemicals in defunct wood furniture factory.

1.1.2 Site Description

While attempting to contact the owner of the defunct Shushan Bentwood factory located in Salem NY (see other web site on OSC.net) the OSC went to Shushan, NY to the address-of-record. Instead of finding a residence, the OSC found another abandoned wood working factory where wooden chairs were made, and it bore the same name as the facility in Salem. . The building's old wooden exterior is in fair condition but the interior is trashed and one concrete block wall has collapsed. The building contains tons of shaped wood furniture parts constituting a heavy fire load. There is also a large, insulated vertical AST, approximately 2,000 gallons, which may contain chemicals or oil. The nearest residence is 100 feet away and other residences are further along the road. The building is abandoned, but a broken garage door could provide total access to vandals or children The resident of the closest house told the OSC that his dog runs inside the premises routinely (possibly contacting the asbestos) and he has seen youngsters entering the premises too.

1.1.2.1 Location

The Site is approximately 25 miles east of Saratoga Springs and 40 miles north of Albany in the village of Shushan, Washington County, NY, close to the Vermont border.

1.1.2.2 Description of Threat

Abandoned and deteriorated chemical containers and friable asbestos pipe insulation.

1.1.3 Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results

The OSC discovered the presence of 7 55-gallon drums of unknown chemicals and approximately 45 5-gallon pails and similar containers of containers, some labeled as "paint thinner". Many of the containers are in deteriorated condition and at least one had white crystalline material caked around the bottom of the container. In addition to the containers, there is approximately 20 linear feet of friable asbestos insulation, some of which has fallen to the floor
