Overfill of 10,000 gallon above ground double wall diesel tank at chicken processing facility.

Decatur, Alabama

1.1.2.2 Description of Threat

Approximately 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel potential for discharge.

1.1.3 Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results

At 1300 on 03-04-2013, Wyne Farms, LLC reported an overfill of their AST resulting in a discharge of 200 gallons of diesel.  ADEM responded to the scene to oversee clean-up of the spill.  After further investigation, it was discovered that an additional discharge of up to 5,000 gallons may have occurred via underground piping from the AST.  R1 OSC Andrews dispatched.

ADEM and EPA on-scene directing response and investigation.  RP has hired SWS to conduct clean-up.  Excavation of contaminated soils and recovery of diesel and oily water continues.  Spill may have occurred during overfill of tank and resulting damage to underground piping.  Spill threatening Bakers Creek which is a tributary to the Tennessee River.
