2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
Week of May 13-May 19, 2013:
ERRS continued excavation and stockpiling activities removing approximately 1913 tons of contaminated soil for an approximate total of 4718 tons to date. Dust suppression and road washing continues at excavation areas, along Amerine Street and in stockpile/staging area. START continued real-time air monitoring and air sampling activities around excavation and stockpile areas. All air samples to date have been below the 40 ug/m3 action level.
- Completed excavation of Areas 12 & 24;
- Began excavation of Area 23;
- Installed geotextile liner/barrier and began backfilling of Areas 12 to 16 & 24;
- Continued receiving and staging stone, backfill and topsoil for restoration;
- City of Crooksville Water Department installed a new water meter and repaired a leak in the water line in Area 23;
- Collected confirmation sample from Areas 23-3 and 24;
Week of May 20-May 26, 2013:
ERRS continued excavation and stockpiling activities removing approximately 1155 tons of contaminated soil for an approximate total of 5873 tons. Dust suppression and road washing continues at excavation areas, along Amerine Street and in stockpile/staging area. START continued real-time air monitoring and air sampling activities around excavation and stockpile areas. All air samples to date have been below the 40 ug/m3 action level.
- Completed excavation of Areas 14 and 23;
- Large tree removal was conducted in Area 23;
- Completed backfilling of Areas 14 and 24 and began backfilling of Area 23;
- Began restoration of driveway and parking areas in Areas 14 and 23;
- Continued receiving and staging stone, backfill and topsoil for restoration;
- Completed test treatment of a stockpile containing TCLP lead with Free Flow 200 and collected sample for TCLP analysis indicating treatment was successful;
- Repaired and cleaned a collapsed storm drain in Area 14;
- Collected confirmation soil samples from Areas 23-1 and 23-2;
- Covered and secured stockpiles;
- Demobed on May 24.
Week of May 27-June 2, 2013:
ERRS continued excavation and stockpiling activities removing approximately 457 tons of contaminated soil for an approximate total of 6330 tons. Dust suppression and road washing continues at excavation areas, along Amerine Street and in stockpile/staging area. START continued real-time air monitoring and air sampling activities around excavation and stockpile areas. All air samples to date have been below the 40 ug/m3 action level.
- Remobed on May 28;
- Large tree removal was conducted in Areas 27 and 28;
- Began and completed excavation and backfilling of Area 27;
- Completed restoration of gravel pad and driveway in Areas 15 and 27;
- Continued receiving and staging stone, backfill and topsoil for restoration;
- Began excavation of Area 28;
- Collected three assessment samples from Area 28 and XRF screening identified high concentrations of lead in two of the samples as high as 36,000 ppm;
- Collected confirmation soil sample from Area 27.
Week of June 3-June 9, 2013:
ERRS completed excavation and stockpiling activities removing approximately 1305 tons of contaminated soil for an approximate total of 7635 tons. Dust suppression and road washing continues at excavation areas, along Amerine Street and in stockpile/staging area. START completed real-time air monitoring and air sampling activities around excavation and stockpile areas. All air samples to date have been below the 40 ug/m3 action level.
- Large tree removal was conducted in Areas 27 and 28;
- Began and completed excavation and began backfilling of Area 28;
- Continued receiving and staging stone, backfill and topsoil for restoration;
- Began final restoration in all Areas with placement and grading of topsoil;
- Collected three confirmation soil samples from Area 28.
Week of June 10-June 16, 2013:
ERRS completed final restoration activities and secured all stockpiles. A total of approximately 7635 tons of lead contaminated soils were excavated and stockpiled at the former Hull Pottery Facility. All equipment was decontaminated in preparation for demobilization.
- Completed backfilling of Area 28;
- Restroed driveway in Area 28;
- Completed receiving and staging stone, backfill and topsoil for restoration;
- Completed restoration of all Areas, including replacement of trees and hydroseeding;
- Survey was conducted of the former Hull Pottery Facility in preparation for potential cap installation in Fall of 2013.
2.1.3 Enforcement Activities, Identity of Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs)
EPA is still in the process of locating and determining viable potentially responsible parties.

2.2.1.1 Planned Response Activities
USEPA plans to take the following actions:
- Prepare cost estimate for the placement of a cap on the former Hull Pottery Facility;
- Address any issues pertaining to restoration work at previously excavated areas.
2.2.1.2 Next Steps
USEPA is evaluating options for final disposition of the excavated materials and considering options to address the remaining waste material that is present on the Hull Pottery property.
