1.1.1 Incident Category
Removal Assessment for vapor intrusion
1.1.2 Site Description
The site is a NPL Superfund site. The site remedy included the connection of a public water supply line and the installation and operation of a groundwater pump and treat system. When the Records of Decision for the Site were issued in 1990 and 1992, EPA did not routinely include the vapor intrusion pathway in the assessment of risks from potential exposure to site contaminants.
1.1.2.1 Location
The Butz Landfill Superfund Site is located south of Camelback Mountain, along North Road in Jackson Township, Monroe County, in east-central Pennsylvania. The closest town or village to the site is Reeders which is about one mile south of the site.
1.1.2.2 Description of Threat
Groundwater is contaminated with volatile organic compounds, primarily Trichloroethylene Some homes are located within close proximity to the groundwater contaminant plume. There is the potential for exposure to volatile organic compounds in indoor air via the vapor intrusion pathway.

2.1.1 Narrative
On July 12, EPA OSC and the Community Involvement Coordinator conducted recon of the Site area and stopped at the Jackson Township municipal building. EPA personnel informed the Township Secretary of
the upcoming air sampling and provided their contact information.
On August 9, 2013 EPA OSC, hydrogeologist and EPA ERT personnel (2) conducted site recon and met with residents to discuss the upcoming vapor intrusion assessment. EPA OSC obtained verbal access for the sampling from several property owners. OSC will follow-up with a request for a signed access agreement.

2.2.1 Anticipated Activities
EPA will be conducting a vapor intrusion assessment of up to ten homes beginning on October 1, 2013. This assessment will include prescreening of the homes using the TAGA van. This will aid EPA in the removal of any household products that may interfer with the detection of TCE in the indoor samples and the removal of any products that may contain TCE and other VOCs that are in the groundwater plume.
Anticipated schedule of performance
Monday – 30 September 2013 – Mobilize to the site
Tuesday – 01 October 2013 – Clean out/Install subslab ports
Wednesday - 02 October 2013 – TAGA monitoring/commence Summa canister sampling (subslab, basement, first floor, and outside)
Thursday – 03 October 2013 – Cease Summa canister sampling (subslab, basement, and first floor)
Friday – 04 October demobilize from the site.
