The Butz Landfill Superfund Site is located south of Camelback Mountain, along North Road in Jackson Township, Monroe County, in east-central Pennsylvania. The closest town or village to the site is Reeders which is about one mile south of the site. The 13.42 acre site is a former municipal dump, where the groundwater is contaminated with volatile organic compounds, primarily the solvent, trichloroethylene. EPA finalized the site on the National Priorities List in March 1989. In 1990 and 1992 EPA selected a remedy for the site to address the long term cleanup of the site. The remedy for the site included connecting 50 homes to a public water supply and installing a groundwater pump and treat system.
Since 2007, EPA has been conducting indoor air sampling to determine whether homes located near the groundwater plume are being affected by vapor intrusion. In early June 2013, EPA’s Remedial Program referred the site to the Removal Program for further vapor intrusion evaluation. The Removal Program will be conducting a vapor intrusion assessment which will include the collection of sub-slab and indoor air samples at selected residences.
