1.1.1 Incident Category
Removal Assessment for vapor intrusion
1.1.2 Site Description
The site is a NPL Superfund site. The site remedy included the connection of a public water supply line and the installation and operation of a groundwater pump and treat system. When the Records of Decision for the Site were issued in 1990 and 1992, EPA did not routinely include the vapor intrusion pathway in the assessment of risks from potential exposure to site contaminants.
1.1.2.1 Location
The Butz Landfill Superfund Site is located south of Camelback Mountain, along North Road in Jackson Township, Monroe County, in east-central Pennsylvania. The closest town or village to the site is Reeders which is about one mile south of the site.
1.1.2.2 Description of Threat
Groundwater is contaminated with volatile organic compounds, primarily Trichloroethylene Some homes are located within close proximity to the groundwater contaminant plume. There is the potential for exposure to volatile organic compounds in indoor air via the vapor intrusion pathway.

2.1.1 Narrative
During the week of November 12, 2013, the EPA OSC and EPA ERT personnel were onsite to conduct vapor intrusion sampling at residences located near the contaminated groundwater plume. Subslab and indoor air samples and ambient air samples were collected Six residences were sampled. A seventh home, which is a rental property, was to be sampled as well, however the property owner did not have the key to enter the property.
EPA ERT did monitoring of the homes using the TAGA Bus prior to placing the summa canisters. All TAGA MS/MS indoor air monitoring events targeted the following VOCs: tetrachloroethene (PCE), TCE, total dichloroethene (DCE) and vinyl chloride (VCL).
Tedlar bag samples were collected from the subslab ports and analyzed via the loop injection on the GC/MS in the TAGA laboratory on site. The target compounds for the Tedlar bags will be tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), total-dichloroethene (DCE), vinyl chloride (VCL), No signiifcant levels of TCE, PCE or 1,2 DCE were detected in the grab samples.

2.2 Planning Section
|
|
|
|
2.2.1 Anticipated Activities
Validated sampling data is expected in approximately 6 weeks from November 15, 2013
2.2.1.1 Planned Response Activities
2.2.1.2 Next Steps
Evaluate the validated analytical data and issue the Trip Report. The EPA OSC plans to conduct a second round of assessment air sampling in the first quarter of 2014.
2.2.2 Issues
There were several property owners who did not wish to participate even though their homes are located near the contaminated plume.
