2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
The following actions have taken place at the Site during this reporting period:

ERRS and START mobilized back to the Site on January 4, 2010 following the Holiday Break.  During this time away the Site was monitored by security.

During this week, crews dug down along side the northern side of the storm sewer to see if contaminated areas discovered on the southern side continued northward.  The main area of contamination discovered prior to the break was south of the sewer nearer to the middle inlet.  This contamination continued under the pipe and to the other side.  On Friday, the 8th, ERRS removed this section of storm sewer and dug out the contamination underneath and then replaced the pipe on top of clean backfill.  No other areas of contamination were found along the northern edge of the pipe, which was expected due to the cleanup actions already conducted by NCDENR in September 2009.

START also identified several other areas were further soil removal may be needed.  These areas are along the slope near some trees.  This area is also a heavy drainage pathway from the upper portions of the property.

  2.2 Planning Section

2.2.1 Anticipated Activities

    2.2.1.1 Planned Response Activities

During the next reporting period it is expected that disposal of the already stockpiled soils will begin.  In addition, some backfill may be placed in areas already excavated and screened.  Certain portions of this excavation need to be back-filled before further excavation can be completed in order to provide support.  Once such area is around the eastern most storm inlet.  This is the inlet that is supported by battery casings.  The rest of the pipe needs to be supported before removal of the box and battery casings can be complete.

    2.2.1.2 Next Steps

Beyond the activities mentioned above Site Restoration is all that would remain.

2.2.2 Issues

Issues at this site include the proximity of residences which includes vehicle and foot traffic.  Also of concern is the presence of ground water infiltration into the excavated areas.
