On 12/8/10, Smiths Detection informed EPA that all 37 of the IONSCAN 400A instruments formerly in possession of the Administraction de Correccion were received at the Smith Detection New Jersey Facility. Smiths Detection has removed the IMS assembly containing the sealed radioactive source from each instrument and will be returning them to their factory in Toronto, Canada. The instrument decommission certificates were sent out to the Administraction de Correccion on 12/9/10.

On 12/30/10, Smiths Detection informed EPA that all 37 units were inventoried and shipped to the Smiths Detection manufacturing plant in Mississauga, Ontario Canada, for disassembly and source removal. Smiths Detection considers this a closed matter.

01/14/11, OSC Daly contacted Smiths Detection to obtain further clarification on the final destination of the Ni-63 sources. Smiths Detection Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) informed EPA that once the sources are delivered to their Toronto facility they are considered disposed as far as their (US) records. These sources may be either recycled or disposed depending on the source age. OSC Daly contacted RERT Commander, Sam Poppell, and he confirmed that EPA actions are completed in this matter.
