1.1.1 Site Description
In March 2010, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) Public Drinking Water Branch (PDWB) found trichloroethylene (TCE) in two non-community wells and an irrigation well on the western edge of Rogersville, Missouri. MDNR’s Superfund Section initiated a combined Preliminary Assessment/Site Investigation (PA/SI) integrated Removal Site Evaluation (RSE) on March 24, 2010. Initial sampling events found 13 of the 100 wells sampled had detectable concentrations of TCE.
Five drinking water wells within that sampling group had TCE concentrations above the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 5 parts per billion (ppb). Of these 5 residences, four have whole-house granulated activated carbon filtration systems and one has had a new drinking water well installed. Whole-house treatment systems were installed at 5352 South Farm Road 247, 5480 South Farm Road 247, 9372 East Farm Road 186 and 5660 South Farm Road 247. A new well was constructed at 10074 East Farm Road 186 due to the high concentations of TCE in the old well and the closing of the old well to prevent further potential contamination of the aquifer.
The source of the TCE release is unknown at this time. MDNR requested that the EPA provide an alternate water supply to households drinking contaminated water. The EPA plans to continue the well water and source assessment work at the site.
The site has now been added to the National Priorities List and sampling has been transitioned to the EPA Superfund Remedial Program. The EPA Superfund Remedial Program continues to sample wells and investigate the release of TCE (Devin Pollock, Remedial Project Manager).

2.1.1 Narrative
There have been 506 wells sampled as of the last sampling event in Novmeber 2012.
2.1.2 Enforcement Activities, Identity of Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs)
The source of the contamination has not been determined, but sampling efforts to find the source will continue.

2.2 Planning Section
|
|
|
2.2.1 Anticipated Activities
The EPA will continue to sample wells in the area through the Superfund Remedial Program.
2.2.1.1 Planned Response Activities
The EPA will continue to install water treatment systems on residential drinking water wells with concentrations of TCE that exceed the MCL.
2.2.1.2 Next Steps
The EPA will continue, where necessary, to offer water treatment systems to residences that meet the response action criteria (i.e., MCL exceedance) as a result of future sampling events. Drinking water well sampling will continue through the EPA Superfund Remedial Program.
