1.1.2.2 Description of Threat - Spilled mercury which is toxic by inhalation
1.1.3 Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results - The owner of the practice did an excellent job of limiting contaminant migration from the examining room where the sphymomanometer malfunctioned. When EPA screened the hallway just outside the room, and the rest of the building, all readings were below the 1,000 ng/m3 EPA residential action number. Most readings were equivalent to background. The examining room however, was in excess of 50,000 ng/m3. Visible mercury beads were observed on the tile floor.

2.1 Operations Section

2.1.1 Narrative - EPA advised the owner that a removal action was required to prevent the mercury from spreading throughout the building or being transferred by shoes into patient's or worker's cars. EPA conducted a sweep of the floor in the examining room and gathered numerous beads of mercury that amounted to an estimated 10 grams. EPA placed the mercury into the same glass jar the owner had been using to capture spilled mercury.
2.1.2 Response Actions to Date - The owner hired First Environmental Nationwide of Macon, GA to conduct the removal action. First Environmental used a mercury identifier powder to better enable them to spot the contamination. Then First Environmental used an amalgamizing powder to stabilize the mercury beads. The powder was swept up and placed into a drum. After that procedure, First Environmental conducted air monitoring which identified one hot spot on th efloor. After repeating the removal procedure the mercury vapor level was reduced to back ground. First Environmental disposed of all contaminated material and the elemental mercury through EQ's Michigan facility.
