The incident was located at the NTR Metals Dallas headquarters where precious metals are recycled and refined using multiple methods including electrolytic recovery.

The site is located in a mixed use, light industrial section of Dallas TX, located about 7 miles North of downtown Dallas off of Interstate 35.

2.1.1 Narrative
EPA mobilized to the site located north of downtown Dallas. EPA observed that the rectifier unit, which powers a set of electrolytic vats, had malfunctioned resulting in a fire. The fire compromised two 100 gallon electrolytic vats, resulting in the release of a solution containing 5% nitric acid into secondary containment. Dallas Fire and Haz-Mat responded to the incident and applied water to extinguish the fire. The use of water during the fire fighting efforts caused some of the nitric acid solution/firewater to overflow from the secondary containment and onto the surrounding floor. The fire water was contained to the processing room were the fire began and the nitric acid solution did not migrate off-site. The fire began early the morning of 7 March, 2011 and was declared extinguished about four hours later at approximately 0630.
