1.1.2 Site Description

The Site is a 2.8 acre lot with a 61,000 ft2 abandoned industrial building, formerly occupied by Wisconsin Die Casting, LLC, in a mixed residential, commercial, and industrial area. The Site building is currently vacant and has fallen into disrepair, with continuous and persistent trespassing by scavengers and vandals.

2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
    2.1.1 Narrative
ERRS sub-contractors removed temporary power and re-secured the building and Site to deter trespassing. PCB sampling data was received, analyzed and discussed with City of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin representatives to determine next steps (see Section 2.2.2)

2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
Site activities during the reporting period included the following:

- Secured building windows, skylights & doors;
- Disconnected and dismantled temporary power source;
- Re-secured perimeter fencing & gates; and
- Reviewed, tabulated & presented data from confirmatory sampling to City & State (see Section 2.2.2).

  2.2 Planning Section
    2.2.1 Anticipated Activities
During the next reporting period, the following activities are planned:

- Investigate nature & extent of subsurface contamination on east side & underneath building foundation;
- Conduct additional cleaning of floor trenches and drains in the building floor; and
- Develop a workpan to address additonal contamination which is or has the potential to migrate off-site.

2.2.2 Issues
Additional confirmatory samping was conducted which revealed elevated concentrations of PCBs in soils on the east side of the building and underneath the building foundation. Groundwater sampling from groundwater probe GP-12 within the building footprint showed PCB (Aroclor 1242) contamination of 110,000 mg/kg. See figures in 'documents' section of website for details of data/results. This data was presented to City and State officicals on 1/21/2015. During the meeting, EPA was urged to conduct additional investigation of nature & extent of this contamination and propose next steps or additional activities to address potential off site migration.
