On November 25, 2008, the EPA Emergency Planning and Response Branch (EPRB) received a verbal request for support from the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (CTDEP) for a site located at 500 Moose Hill Road in Monroe, CT. CTDEP responded to a request from the owner of St. Johns Cemetery, a privately owned and operated property, regarding drums found at the Site. CTDEP excavated several drums in a wooded area located at the site but requested support from EPA to continue excavation and disposal activities at potentially contaminated areas. Samples taken from polymerized material in the drums found elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), volatile organic compounds (VOC), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC), and metals.
St. Johns Cemetery is located along Moose Hill Road in Monroe, CT. Prior to its current use as a cemetery, the property was used as an airport. The Site covers an area of approximately 52.42 acres, is relatively flat and is located within a residential area.
