The City of Terre Haute acquired 1901 Prairieton Road, Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana, in order to construct sewer improvements. The City discovered open dumping had occurred at the Site, including the abandonment of foundry sands and other industrial wastes. The City requested U.S. EPA removal assistance.

EPA performed a site assessment and documented lead, a hazardous substance, in surface soils exceeding Removal Management Levels and hazardous waste criteria for TCLP lead (D008).

Drums were located around the Site, inventoried, evaluated for hazardous substances, and staged in a centralized location. EPA overpacked deteriorated drums of waste into salvage drums pending characterization and disposal. Drums were evaluated for hazardous substances. Empty drums were crushed. EPA completed evaluation of a large aboveground storage tank for hazardous substances; no hazardous substances were present.
