On January 31st, 2014 at approximately 12:30pm an 11,500 gal tanker truck rolled over onto US Rt 6 at mile marker 71.6 in Barnstable, MA. The EPA OSC deployed to the scene and entered unified command with MassDEP and DOT. Three of the 4 compartments on the tanker truck were breached spilling 5000 - 7000gals of home heating fuel oil onto the ground. The spill occurred 1/2 mile from a public drinking well. The US EPA is coordinating with the Massachusetts State Drinking Water Program. MassDEP contractor was charged with capping the tanker. The PRP has hired a cleanup contractor and a vac truck. The home heating oil has seeped into the soil and has not reached navigable waters. No drinking water wells have been closed at this time. Contractor mitigation efforts are to continue to remove product from tank and excavate impacted soils throughout the night. There are no known impacts to groundwater at this time.
