At 0915 on January 1, 2021, the UDEQ reported a mercury release in Teasdale, Utah. A local resident was using a deep fryer and checked the oil temperature with a mercury thermometer. Unbeknownst to the resident the thermometer ruptured into the oil. The residents noticed the broken thermometer after cooking and consuming the food. Under the direction of the Region 8 OSC EPA's Environmental Response Team ERT was dispatched to the Site around 1000 PST on January 1, 2021, to screen the house for mercury vapors, and take follow-up actions as needed. ERT reported that the residence did not exceed any health based risk levels for mercury. The ERT did collect the broken thermometer, cooking oil and the mercury that was in the cooking oil for proper disposal.
