On March 4, 2004 near Baxterville, Mississippi, a 14" crude oil pipeline transferring heavy,14 grade,
asphaltic crude developed a crack caused by corrosion, releasing an estimated 30bbls. of heavy oil.
A soil surface area of approximately 30'x 200' was impacted as the oil traveled approximately 30 yds. down gradient. No water was impacted. Initial cold temperature prevented clean up crews from immediately recovering the heavy oil.
As temps. rose clean up crews were able to vac all free standing oil and were sopping up remaining oil with sorbent pads. Minimal soil excavation has occurred. Disposal alternatives will be dictated by the MSDEQ. The effected pipeline has been repaired.
