On February 18, 2010 a site visit/inspection was conducted by at Viking Pools by Mark Burnette of North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR). Viking Pools are registered as a small quantity generator (SQG) with the State of North Carolina (NCR 000 145 284). At the time of the inspection the facility was closed, and the name on the mail box was changed to Crystal Palace Pools. During the site visit, Mr. Burnette noted that the facility was closed/ unoccupied and one drum was located on the concrete pad at the southwest corner of the building. The drum had labeling that was marginally legible and photographed the drum and the mailbox markings for his trip report. The report was forwarded to OSC Ken Rhame for further evaluation on February 23, 2010. OSC Rhame was on annual leave at that time and solicited for back-up OSC support from other OSCs who were conducting site work in North Carolina or northern South Carolina. On February 24, 2010, OSC Andrews mobilized to Viking Pools from the Crowders Mountain State Park Drum (CMSPD) Site in Kings Mountain, NC. Steve Rieck of the Air Protection Division is currently on detail to ERRB and working at CMSPD site also accompanied OSC Andrews on this investigation.
