June 5, 2006: EPA - 1, START - 1, ERRS - 9; CAT 330 excavator, T190 Bobcat, Deere 310 backhoe - At Tank 13, excavation and management of contaminated soils continued. Work on excavation and management of soils at Tank 6 area was also continued. HPO was on site to oversee excavation. START and DEQ collected and analyzed disposal samples for tank 13 and conducted paint filter tests. One ERRS was demobed.
June 6, 2006: EPA - 1, START - 1, ERRS - 5, DEQ - 4; CAT 330 excavator, T190 Bobcat, Deere 310 backhoe - Work continued in the Tank 13 area, with excavation around the tank area an management of soils. 13 loads of contaminated soil were transported from Tank 13 to Marpi Landfill for disposal. When the soil in the tank was removed, the remaining portion of tank bottom began to be cut up. Management of contaminated soils at Tank 6 continued and tank bottom decontamination continued.
EPA OSC and START provided technical assistance for the development of the KV-1 monitoring well. Two drums of water were removed using a sand bailer operated by the Water Task Force. After the two drums, the well was dry and needed to recharge.
June 7, 2006: EPA - 1, START - 1, ERRS - 5, DEQ - 4; CAT 330 excavator, T190 Bobcat, Deere 310 backhoe - Cutting of the tank bottom at Tank 13 was completed and one truck of metal was loaded out at Tank 13. Work continued excavating and managing soils at Tank 6. Decon and demobe activitied were also conducted. The oil water separator and water tank were cleaned out. Supplies were moved from the storage connex into the 40' container. START and DEQ conducted sampling and analysis of disposal piles at Tanks 13 and 6 and confirmation samples where ready at Tank 13 and 6. Paint filter tests were conducted on disposal samples.
Development of the monitoring well at KV-1 continued, with 3 drums pumped out of the well over the day. The recharge of the well was very slow, taking approximately 6 hours to fill the well to
June 8, 2006: EPA - 1, START - 1, ERRS - 5, DEQ - 3; CAT 330 excavator, T190 Bobcat, Deere 310 backhoe - Contaminated soil was loaded out of Tank 13 for daily cover. A total of 15 loads of soil were transferred off site from Tank 13. Excavation continued underneath the Tank 13 bottom. Seven loads of contaminated soil were loaded off from Tank 6 and the remaining tank bottom was cut up and stockpiled. The last remaining hot spot at Tank 4 was deliniated and excavated. START and DEQ collected and analyzed confirmation samples from hot spot at Tank 4 and Tank 13 grid points. A disposal sample for Tank 6 was also collected and analyzed.
Develoment of MW-1 continued, with 3 drums being pumped out of the well; 2 drums in the morning and 1 drum in the late afternoon.
June 9, 2006: EPA - 1, START - 1, ERRS - 6, DEQ - 5; CAT 330 excavator, T190 Bobcat, Deere 310 backhoe - Soil excavation at Tank 6 continued with oversight from HPO. One load of metal was transferred off site from Tank 6. Metal around the Indian Mulberry tree at Tank 6 was cut. This was done to cut out as much metal and remove as much oil as possible, without killing the tree. Eight loads of contaminated soil were transported off site to Marpi landfill from Tank 6. Excavation at Tank 13 continued. At one location near the former pipeline the excavation encountered groundwater. The groundwater filled the excavation and oil seeped in with the groundwater. The source of the oil did not appear to be from above, but rather from the west wall of the excavation. The oil was removed from the groundwater and the open excavation was allowed to sit over the weekend. Eight loads of contaminated soil were transported off site to Marpi from Tank 13. Samples were collected for confirmation at Tank 6 and Tank 13. One hot spot still remained at Tank 13, while almost all of the samples at Tank 6 were above cleanup goals.
June 10, 2006: EPA - 1, ERRS - 2, START - 1; CAT 330 excavator, T190 Bobcat, Deere 310 backhoe - Two loads of metal were transferred off site, one from Tank 13 and the other from Tank 6. START worked on packing and sample shipment to Region 9 laboratory.
June 11, 2006: Day off
Complete restoration at Tank 4, 6 and 13.
Conduct post tank removal sampling at Tank 6 and 13 to conduct appropriate excavation.
Complete operations at Tank 4, 6 and 13.
Groundwater contamination at Tank 13.
Extent of excavation at Tank 6.
Weather...always hot and sometimes raining.
