Time-Critical - Removal Action Pollution Report (POLREP) #4
Site Description
The Site is a former orchard area that has had residential development.  Prior to an EPA ban in 1972, a variety of pesticides including lead-arsenates and DDT compounds were applied.

EPA conducted a removal action at one property at the Crozet Arsenic Site in Crozet, Virginia.  Historical sampling indicated that additional properties may need removal work.

Current Activities
On November 30, 2006, EPA Region 3 approved Request for Ceiling Increase, Change in Scope, and an Exemption from the 12-month Statutory Limit for a Removal Action at the Crozet Township Arsenic Site (Crozet Arsenic Site).

On December 13, 2006, EPA issued a task order to ERRS contractor Kemron Environmental Services to perform removal activities at the Site.  The budget is set at $100,000.

During the week of Jan 11, 2007, EPA, EPA distributed fact sheets to all residents in the Orchard Acres development.  The fact sheet included a request for access to sample properties for arsenic contamination.

START collected samples from three homes (ID # 38, 40, 44) to further delineate horizontal and vertical contamination.

On Jan 16, 2007, EPA placed an order for 20,000 Edenfern brand ferns.  The ferns will be used for the phytoremediation areas of the project.

On February 11-13, 2007, START contractor Tetra Tech EMI collected samples from 50 properties (ID’s: 46, 103, 109, 112, 113, 115, 121, 123, 125, 144, 151, 152, 153, 154, 157, 158, 160, 162, 170, 171, 173, 175, 176, 177, 178, 181, 182, 186, 196, 197, 199, 200, 203, 204, 207, 210, 214, 216, 221, 222, 225, 227, 236, 233, 237, 239, 240, 241, 243, 248).   The samples were collected as five point composite samples from in the front and back yards.

On March 20, 2007, START collected samples from five (5) homes (ID’s: 176, 177, 186, 196, 203).  These samples were grab samples from discrete locations at homes who had composite samples above 48 mg/kg during the February sampling event.  Both surface and subsurface samples were collected at these locations to delineate, if possible, the extent of contamination above 58 mg/kg.

Next Steps

EPA and START will review the results from the recent sampling event.  Based on the results, additional samples will be collected to further delineate properties with arsenic contamination.  The samples will be collected at properties that had composite samples that had results above 48 mg/kg.  The action level for conducting a removal action at this site remains 58 mg/kg.

EPA and START will continue public outreach activities.

EPA will continue to coordinate with all appropriate local, state, and federal agencies.
