The facility was known to use chromated copper arsenate (CCA) to treat fence lumber and mine lumber. Arsenic contamination has been determined as the main contaminant of concern, and an Action Memorandum has been approved for the removal of arsenic contaminated soils, sediments and residual CCA product in the pressure vessels and tanks on site.
Site work continues. Data validation has been received from the XRF sampling events, indicating that the XRF data is acceptable. All areas identified by XRF sampling as being contaminated have been marked off for excavation purposes. Soil excavation has been initiated in the northern portion of the property along the side of the facility. An engineering report has been received which discusses safe excavation procedures near the buildings foundation to avoid structural damage to the building. There appears to be an underground spring that is making the soils very wet.
Pressure Vessel 1 (PV1) continues to be cleaned. Metal wheel sanding, scraping and pressure washing is being conducted int PV1.
Crews will initiate the opening of the remaining tanks inside the facility using torches. The tanks will then be cleaned of residual CCA product using scraping, metal wheel grinding, and pressure washing as necessary.
Crews will continue operations in PV1, and move to PV2 following the completion of PV1 clean up. Crews will continue work inside the building to clean residual CCA product from the seven free standing tanks inside the facility.
Soil excavation will also continue.
Soil excavation, tank and pressure vessel cleaning will continue. Due to the wetness of the soils being excavated, these areas will be backfilled with a layer of gravel prior to implementing the layer of clean fill material. The fill material will be compacted and filled in to original grade
WVDEP has been visiting the site, and they are satisfied with the EPA led removal action activities.
A structural engineer has delivered his report to the OSC showing proper engineering procedures to be taken to allow the safe removal of soils near the foundation of the building.
