Pollution Report (POLREP) #5
Site Description
The two-acre Site, located in a rural, residential area at 91 Western Avenue, Henniker, New Hampshire (Long. N71° 50' 34", W Lat. 43° 10' 09"), consists of the former disposal location of sludge and solid waste for the Contoocook Valley Paper Company (CVPC).

In response to a New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services request, EPA conducted a Removal Program Preliminary Assessment/Site Investigation (PA/SI) on May 6-9, 2003, and June 3, 2003.

The key finding of the PA/SI was heavy metal contamination of surface and subsurface soils due to burial of sludge waste and on-site placement of bulk paper products.  The primary metals of concern and their maximum concentrations are shown in the table below:

Lead (up to 7,979ppm)
Cadmium (up to 1,340ppm)
Barium  (up to 24,480ppm)
Chromium (up to 1,622ppm)

For additional background information, please see POLREP No. 1.
