The two-acre Site, located in a rural, residential area at 91 Western Avenue, Henniker, New Hampshire (Long. N71° 50' 34", W Lat. 43° 10' 09"), consists of the former disposal location of sludge and solid waste for the Contoocook Valley Paper Company (CVPC).
In response to a New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services request, EPA conducted a Removal Program Preliminary Assessment/Site Investigation (PA/SI) on May 6-9, 2003, and June 3, 2003.
The key finding of the PA/SI was heavy metal contamination of surface and subsurface soils due to burial of sludge waste and on-site placement of bulk paper products. The primary metals of concern and their maximum concentrations are shown in the table below: Lead (up to 7,979ppm) Cadmium (up to 1,340ppm) Barium (up to 24,480ppm) Chromium (up to 1,622ppm)
For additional background information, please see POLREP No. 1.
Since POLREP No. 4, the following work has been completed:
On 21 June 2004, the ERRS contractor re-mobilized to the Site to complete the final restoration activities. This included: loaming, seeding, and the placement of erosion control matting on the riverbank portion of the site; and raking and seeding the remainder of the Site that had been disturbed by removal activities.
With the conclusion of the final restoration work on 21 June 2004, all removal activities have been completed.
