Site Description
The Site is approximately 110 acres and is bordered by residents on three sides and the Otter River on the fourth. The nearest home is  600 ft from the Mill. The Site has been inactive since the mid 1990's and consists of a warehouse and mill complex which contained over 50 vats/tanks ranging from 20 to 275,000 gallons,and several hundred drums containing varrious hazardous substances, and a small number of compressed gas cylinders. Friable asbestos containing material (ACM)was removed from the mill buildings. The warehouse rubble contained minimal quantities of ACM debris.

The friable ACM posed an inhalation threat to nearby residents and trespassers. The containerized hazardous substances in the mill buildings had the potential to release to the Otter River and represented a potential fire hazard.

Current Activities
EPA and its contractors have completed recovering drums, collecting lab pack material, pumping out tanks and disposing of ACM material from the abandoned mill and warehouse. Approximately 275 tons of ACM debris were removed from the warehouse bulidings.  75 tons of bagged friable ACM, 100 drums of consolidated liquids, 248 RCRA empty drums, approx. 2500 pounds of lab pack material, and one gallon of elemental mercury were removed from the mill buildings. All material was shipped off site to EPA approved facilities. The town removed 7 large non PCB transformers which were adjacent to the mill.

Planned Removal Actions
All activities specified in the Action Memorandum are complete, and the contractor demobilized from the site on July 12, 2005. No further removal activities are planned. The removal action is complete.

Next Steps
The USCG Atlantic Strike Team, which provided support to the OSC, will prepare an "After Action Report" which will document the removal activites and resulting Site conditions.
